Today is kind of a repeat of yesterday as far as the road and terrain goes. 55 miles to Sanderson. But zeros services in between so we need to make sure we have what we need when we leave Marathon.
The ride started out with a cross head wind which made the first 20 miles somewhat more tedious. The first 20 miles were mostly flat. About the only thing of note was going over a hill called Lemon's gap.
As the day wore on I found myself repeatedly asking the question "why would anyone live here" and repeatedly answering myself "no one does".
After this point things started to trend downhill more and the wind started to change direction to be more of a tail wind. I stopped at a picnic area, which in Texas is a rest area without rest rooms. After sitting there for while John showed up. We left together and immediately found ourselves buzzing along with a nice tailwind. Before we knew it we had gone an additional 10 miles and then another.
At one point we crossed the Pecos county line, which in the absence of crossing state lines seemed like an event to commemorate with a picture.
The road deteriorated when we crossed the county line and when we left Pecos county some miles later deteriorated again.
We eventually arrived in Sanderson, which is quickly becoming a ghost town. We passed by dozens of businesses coming through town that were closed and for sale. There are two convenience stores in town and one restaurant. The camp site is not particularly great but they do have a shower, laundry and WIFI.
I think the plan is to eat at the restaurant tonight.
Tomorrow is going to be a longer day of about 70 miles, mostly downhill, but I think more rollers than we have had in the past two days so it will be long. I think we have at least one store part way through that we can stop at to resupply with water.
