Day 22 - Fort Hancock to Van Horn

In case anyone is under the impression that Texas is flat, today should convince you otherwise, and tomorrow more so. Today we enter an area with limited services. The only place with a store to get water or food at is in Sierra Blanca and at the end of our ride in Van Horn. Tomorrow, will be a long 90 mile day with extremely limited services along the way and a lot of climbing. On paper it looks like the longest day.

But today is no slouch either with about 75 miles of riding.

We started out on a very lightly traveled farm road that skirted the Mexican border, then we started following I 10, sometimes on the freeway and sometimes on frontage roads. There was one fairly significant, but not steep climb into Sierra Blanca.

You can barely see the trucks on the freeway ahead on this part of the climb. We need to get over those mountains.

And a small one just before a nice long descent into Van Horn where we are staying at a KOA campground.

This was taken just before the final short climb looking back toward Sierra Blanca.

And in the same location Hal, eating something before the final climb.

The decent into Van Horn was fast along the freeway.

Spagetti again tonight cooked by Hal and Alisha. It was good. Now for our nightly map meeting and a good nights rest and early start in the AM for what is likely to be our hardest day for the entire trip.

The day after tomorrow is a rest day.
