Day 21 - El Paso to Fort Hancock

Today is an easy day. Only 45 miles and generally downhill along the Rio Grande. A river that we have yet to see any water in.

I didn't take many picture on this day so I'll start with some from our dinner at the Texas Roadhouse last night.

I took this from outside our motel. The lights are from Juarez on the Mexican side of the border.

I did take this close up of pecans growing on a tree. The first I've actually seen. It seems that prior to this they had already been picked.

We drew for cooking spots again and the luck of the draw fell to I and Max to cook today. Pickings in Fort Hancock are very thin. We are staying at the community church in town. I counted a total of 4 churches in town, 2 pathetic convenience stores, one motel and one restaurant. The pizza place that was open last year is now closed.

After some deliberation and having a bite to eat at the local Angies Restaurant we decided that we would eat at Angies. This worked out pretty well although having 12 cyclists show up all at once on what would normally not be a busy evening made them work a bit harder than normal.

The food was pretty good and the service was faster than I would have expected given the size of the staff.

The church left some fruit and a cake and a few other items for us that was very appreciated. Some slept in the church and others outside in tents depending on their preference.

Here is a view to the south from where we camped. You can just make out the border fence.

Trivia question, what modern movie featured a border crossing at Fort Hancock toward the end of the movie?
